The Upstate Medical University Executive Committee

The Upstate Medical University Executive Committee (UEC) serves as the President's senior leadership body and provides high-level, cross-function representation of all aspects of the institution. The UEC meets weekly and provides decision-making and direction related to operations, policy, and capital allocations for the university system.Additionally, the UEC is ultimately responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of the institution's strategic planning process.

Danielle Laraque-Arena, MD, FAAP was named President of SUNY Upstate Medical University in September 2015 and assumed the role in January 2016. She also is the Upstate Health System CEO. In addition to advocacy for the public good, the President ultimately oversees the delivery of the institution’s mission of education, research and patient care for the only health science university in Central New York. The President's Office has major institutional initiatives that complement the strategic plan launched in 2017 to unite the campus under a One University theme. Dr. Laraque-Arena is Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Public Health & Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Tammy Austin-Ketch oversees the academic and clinical activities of the College of Nursing for degree programs at the baccalaureate (RN-BS), master of science, and doctoral (DNP) levels. Prior to her arrival at Upstate, she was employed for nearly 20 years at SUNY Buffalo serving as Assistant Dean for MS and DNP programming, as well as actively practicing as a family nurse practitioner.

Reporting to the president and the executive dean, Dr. Cleary works collaboratively with the college deans, faculty and staff on academic program development and academic infrastructure. She serves as the academic liaison between Upstate and SUNY Central Administration and the accreditation liaison officer to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Dr. Cleary is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and Professor of Medicine.

Ms. Lopez coordinates executive-level efforts to build diversity and inclusion as core values throughout the University. She works collaboratively across campus to implement best practices related to diversity, equity and inclusion in recruitment and retention of students, senior administrators, faculty and staff. She serves as chair of the President's Diversity Council. As Fulbright Scholar, she is developing best practices to overcome education and employment barriers.

She also oversees a 40-member board of directors.

The Extended University Executive Committee

The Extended University Executive Committee (E-UEC) represents the scope of the entire institution. The group serves in an advisory capacity to the University Executive Committee and is responsible for the bi-directional communication of University business and initiatives amongst leadership and internal departments. Related to such, the E-UEC is highly involved in Upstate's strategic planning process. A core composition of E-UEC is established but can vary based upon strategic planning and management needs.

Ms. Alexander serves as Health Care Counsel for Upstate and also is Senior Managing Counsel of the CNY Regional Office of the SUNY Office of General Counsel. Her previous experience includes partnership in an Albany law firm, representing clients in State and Federal Court systems, and appointments as a law guardian and assistant public defender, representing children and indigent adults in Family Courts.

She is responsible for activities related to monitoring and maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations associated with organizational ethics, integrity, fraud/abuse avoidance and conflict of interest management. She holds national certifications as a Certified Healthcare Compliance professional (CHC) and a Certified Compliance and Ethics professional (CCEP).

Dr. White provides leadership to the dozen functions that make up the Division of Student Affairs. Dr. White's work is focused on student success: The offices in Student Affairs collaborate with each other and the faculty to provide service and support to assist students in realizing their potential from the point of contact with the Admissions Office through graduation.

Dr. Davé is responsible for the clinical teaching experience of third and fourth year medical students assigned to Binghamton Campus. He recruits and oversees multiple specialists with full-time, part-time and voluntary faculty status. He is also the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of UHS – a Binghamton Based Health Care System.

Dr. Brenner was elected by the Faculty to be the Chair of the Faculty Council, which represents the voice of the Faculty to the President of the University. He is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and the Medical Director of the Community Campus Emergency Department.

Dr. Katz oversees Upstate's residency and fellowship programs and assures the programs are in full compliance with accreditation requirements. She also oversees international residents' visa requirements and the training verification of former residents and fellows. She monitors resident experiences and issues, including work hour compliance, and provides guidance to residency program directors in program implementation.

As CMO she promotes a positive patient experience and quality of care hospital-wide.

The continuous focus on fostering RN engagement will lead the nursing division in improving quality of care for the patients and families Upstate serves.

Daoust, a NYS Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, is the AOR for the Transitional Care Unit at Community Campus. Her background includes both clinical and administrative experience, which have uniquely positioned her for this role.

Dr. Bogart is the Interim Director of the Upstate Cancer Center where he oversees the multidisciplinary operations for patient care and clinical trials. He has been a national leader in Lung Cancer Research for more than 15 years. In addition to his chair role, he served as Chair of the UUMAS Governing Board for many years.

Mr. Zeman began his role as Interim Chief Information Officer in 2018. He is responsible for the planning, implementation and management of information technology throughout the university to support of the missions of patient care, education and research. He also oversees clinical engineering at both hospitals.

Mr. Frost joined Upstate in 1997 and was appointed Associate Vice President in 2008. He oversees Upstate's human resources planning, policies and programs, as well as Upstate's Employee/Student Health Office. Prior to Upstate, Eric served as Account Manager for Fidelity Investments and as Benefits Manager for MONY. Eric is a graduate of LeMoyne College.

He earned his MD at the University of Connecticut and a master's in medical management at the University of Southern California. Prior to joining Upstate, he led successful initiatives at Geisinger Health System.

Assistant Vice President for Marketing and University Communications

Ms. Caldwell leads the marketing team and provides direction on planning, content, and branding for Upstate's colleges, clinical services and research enterprise. In addition to providing creative services, the department produces activities aimed at consumers, including two magazines, radio show and podcasts, and Oasis and HealthLink programming. She is the recipient of many awards, including the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Professional Service.

Ms. Rokicki works within Strategic Affairs, Office of the President and oversees Upstate's institutional strategic planning and management. The Strategic Plan (OUR Upstate: One University Road Map) is a multi-year and integrated approach to aligning the organization. She additionally provides administrative coordination of institutional activities and is active in the community on behalf of Upstate Medical University.

Mr. Geddes oversees Upstate's public and media relations activities as well its social media program. His office helps promote Upstate activities and faculty, staff and student accomplishments in the media, maintains a Upstate experts speakers' bureau, publishes the university newsletter and maintains the University's official social media outlets.

Ms. Veit is responsible for the development and evaluation of value-added programs and partnerships with community and external organizations. Ms. Veit can provide advice on strategic community program development, as it relates to Upstate's priorities, as well as connect Upstate experts to community organizations. Her office serves as a liaison between Upstate and the broader community.

Mr. Archey forges collaborative relationships with key policymakers at all levels of government and strong partnerships with stakeholder organizations. Coordinating advocacy activities across Upstate's diverse workforce and faculty, he shapes the university system's public policy strategy. Mr. Archey's experience includes service to the Ohio Legislature, Ohio Hospital Association, and nonprofit community health systems.

Chief, Division of Nephrology

Dr. Narsipur is a Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Surgery at Upstate Medical University. He has served as Interim Chair since 2015, overseeing faculty and trainees who deliver one-third of the clinical teaching, research, and patient care functions of the University. A faculty member since 1996, and Chief of the Division of Nephrology since 2008, he also directs the dialysis programs.

Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases

Dr. Thomas is an Infectious diseases physician and researcher and was appointed division chief in November 2016. Prior to joining Upstate, he served twenty years in the U.S. Army. Dr. Thomas provides strategic leadership to a division providing in- and out-patient clinical care, executing a sub-specialty fellowship training program, and conducting a range of clinical research.

Upstate University Health System Leadership

Upstate University Hospital has two campuses—the Downtown Campus, and four miles west of downtown Syracuse, its Community Campus. Hospital leadership oversees all aspects related to patient care at Upstate's hospitals and at its more than 80 specialty clinics. Upstate University Hospital's 17-county service area covers approximately one-third of New York State.
